Formed, Not Fractured

Seeing Brilliance in Our Mental Health

Introduction : Turning the Gem

Hold a diamond to the light and turn it, just slightly.

Nothing about the stone changes, yet it shows you a face you had not seen before.

One small movement is all this book asks.

Turn the gem, and change what you see.

Jenny sat in her car outside the office building, gripping the steering wheel as she watched colleagues stream through the glass doors.

Another Monday morning, another week of maintaining the façade that everything was fine.

Formed, Not Fractured asks you to see your mental health in a new way.

Through a cast of characters drawn from thousands of real conversations, Peter Larkum builds a fresh lens for wellbeing, piece by piece, including the evidence based GREAT DREAM framework adapted from Action for Happiness. Then he lets you watch it go to work in two lives under real pressure, and in one unforgettable night with Arthur, eighty three, on his last evening in the family home.

This book will not try to fix you, because you are not broken. It will simply change what you see when you hear the words mental health, so the phrase means something formed, not fractured.

About the Author

Peter Larkum has spent over 25 years helping people see their mental health differently. Formed, Not Fractured has grown out of thousands of conversations in training rooms and quiet corridors, and out of a single conviction: that the pressure you are under may be forming something of extraordinary value. Peter lives in Hampshire, UK with his wife and four boys.
